Federal funding for energy and resource efficiency in the economy (EEW)

EEW is the federal government’s central funding programme for investments in energy and resource efficiency and the decarbonization of industrial and commercial processes. It is aimed at companies of all sizes that want to invest in highly efficient systems, renewable process heat, energy management systems or the electrification of their production. Funding is available for individual measures as well as systemic transformation projects, with non-repayable grants or low-interest loans with a repayment subsidy.

Who can apply?

Company size: Small, medium-sized and large companies (SMEs receive higher funding rates)
Location: Germany-wide (investment location must be in Germany)

How much is funded?

Funding rate: up to 60 % (subsidy); depending on module and company size
Funding amount: max. EUR 20 million per project

Cross-sectional technologies (module 1)
Process heat from renewable energies (module 2)
MSR, sensor technology & energy management software (module 3)
Energy and resource-related process optimization (module 4)
Transformation plans (module 5)
Electrification of small companies (module 6)
Eligible costs: Investments, systems, components, planning and consultancy services

Project duration usually up to 3 years
Funding available as a grant (BAFA) or as a KfW loan with repayment subsidy
Subsidy cap of up to €1,200 per tonne of CO₂ saved per year

6 steps to EEW funding

Outline project idea

Contact and initial assessment: Together we clarify which EEW module suits your project (cross-sectional technologies, process heat, energy management, process optimization, transformation plan or electrification) and whether the measure is generally eligible for funding.

Create a savings or measures concept

For Module 4 Premium and Module 5, a savings concept or transformation plan by a qualified energy efficiency expert is required. We coordinate the technical assessment, determine the additional investment costs and calculate the CO₂ savings.

Prepare application

Compilation of all necessary documents: technical description, cost calculation, proof of savings, de minimis declarations, SME declaration and, if applicable, transformation plan. We take over the preparation ready for application.

Submit application

Submission via the BAFA portal (for grants) or via the house bank to the KfW (program 295), always before the conclusion of supply and service contracts.

Inspection by BAFA or KfW

Technical and economic assessment by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control (BAFA) or KfW. We assist with queries and provide supplementary documents.

Implementation and drawdown of funds

Once the grant or loan approval has been received, the project can be implemented. After completion, we support you with the proof of use, the basis for the payment of the grant or repayment subsidy.
