State funding for certain topics of different types

German funding programs cover a wide range of topics to support companies at every stage of development. Anyone who wants to grow, conduct innovative research or invest in the future will find the right opportunities here.

Funding by subject area

Digitization

Funding programs make it easier to get started with new technologies and digital business models.

Research & Development / Innovation

Grants, allowances and promotional loans for open-technology projects, new products, processes and services.

Investments & growth

Support for young companies and SMEs in expanding structures, personnel and markets.

Sustainability & environmental protection

Programs for sustainable innovations, resource efficiency, energy and climate protection as well as green start-ups.

Types of funding

Loans

Promotional loans are low-interest loans provided by public development banks such as KfW or Landesbanken. They provide companies with better conditions than standard bank loans and are often combined with grants.

Allowances

Allowances are tax incentives that are claimed retrospectively via the tax return. One example is the research allowance. They offer companies uncomplicated and entitlement-based access to funding, regardless of industry or company size.

Grants

Grants are non-repayable subsidies that are paid out directly to companies, e.g. for investments, innovations or digitalization. As they do not have to be repaid, they are one of the most attractive types of funding, but are often competition-oriented or tied to strict criteria.
